Do you know when you’re trying to look up tips for a better sleep and you’re told to write everything down that’s on your mind? This is to help you combat overthinking while you are trying to fall asleep. The same technique should go for brainstorming your ideas. The best way to get every single one of your thoughts out of your head before narrowing the best solutions is to write it down.

Whenever I am about to work on a project I start with a mind map. One of the best things about them is you don’t have to plan them. It is basically gibberish and deconstructive which helps break down and pinpoint some of your best thoughts. You can start with one huge word with many surrounding or a few key topics to branch from.

Some people I’ve talked to who have tried making mind maps ridicule it for being a bit far-fetched. For example, if you are looking to come up with a cereal brand that is chocolate flavoured the map might go a little something like this:

Dark > Scary > Vampires > Dracula

What if we have our own cereal mascot? It can be like a chocolate Dracula. Hmm.. Count Chocula?!

I’m not saying this is how that scenario went exactly but it seems like a reasonable possibility. How else would you associate Dracula with chocolate?

So, to the people that think it is far-fetched. Yes, it might be. Though that doesn’t make it any less successful. I would encourage next time you are strung out for ideas. Lay them all out on a page and see which two unique categories you can merge together. You never know what could come out of it.

A creative who dips her toes in an assortment of mediums. (Usually a medium hot chocolate, but this will do too).
